Essential oils for babies
There are a number of different ways to use essential oils with babies. You can diffuse oils, use them in an infant massage, or apply them topically.
It’s important to point out that when using essential oils with babies, you need to make sure you follow certain precautions. It’s very important that you dilute essential oils when using on babies since their bodies are small and their skin is more sensitive.
The first thing I want to start off with saying is that for babies three months and younger the safest way to use essential oils is by diffusing them in a diffuser.
For babies and toddlers the general recommendation is about one drop of essential oil per 1 tablespoon of organic carrier oil.
Another important thing to remember is that not all oils are safe for babies. Here are the Best Essential Oils for Babies.
Diffusing essential oils around babies
One of the safest ways to use essential oils with babies is aromatically or using a diffuser. Depending on the diffuser, you only need a couple of drops to get the desired benefits.
This is one of the top ways I recommend using essential oils with babies. Setting up a diffuser in their room is a great way to provide support.

1. Diffusers
One of the safest ways to use essential oils with babies is aromatically or through a diffuser. Most moms I speak to feel the safest using essential oils this way with their babies, especially when they are newborns.
Always remember that less is more, so depending on the diffuser, only a few drops are needed.

2. Books
There are also some very helpful essential oils books out there to have as a quick and easy reference!
One of my favorites is The Essential Life. Not only does it share many useful tips and benefits, but it also has information on using essential oils with babies.

3. Organic Carrier Oils
When using essential oils (especially with babies), it’s important to dilute, dilute, dilute! Since babies have sensitive skin, and their bodies are so little, it’s important to remember to dilute essential oils when using them topically.
Some organic carrier oils you can use are:
- Coconut oil
- Fractionated coconut oil
- Jojoba oil
- Grapeseed oil
- Olive oil
Not only are they great to help when diluting essential oils for babies, but they also provide a great moisturizer without all the harmful chemicals.
When my son was a baby, we used to mix lavender essential oil with coconut oil for a nightly infant massage before bed. It was the perfect way to start a routine and help his little body prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

4. Roller Bottles
A quick and easy way to apply essential oils topically on babies is to use essential oil roller bottles. You can create your own custom blends (depending on your needs), and they easily roll onto the bottoms of their little feet.
You want to make sure to purchase glass roller bottles, and use the correct dilution in your recipes. Here is more information on how to dilute essential oils.
One quick tip is to always put on socks after you roll oils on the bottoms of their feet, so they don’t touch the oils.
