How to use essential oils.
Before we talk about how to use essential oils, it’s important to talk about essential oil safety. There are some points to remember when using essential oils.
What do I need to know about safety?
Dilute- If you have sensitive skin or are just starting out, then make sure to dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil before using. A carrier oil is an oil that is used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. Here are some general recommendations when it comes to diluting essential oils.
- Babies- 1 drop of essential oil per 1 tbsp of carrier oil
- Kids- 1 drop of essential oil per 1 tsp of carrier oil
- Adults- 3-6 drops of essential oil per 1 tsp of carrier oil
- Note: Every body is different. Make sure you remember that less is more when it comes to essential oils. Always dilute more than needed.
Never put essential oils into your eyes or ear canals. If some accidentally gets in your eyes, then make sure to place a few drops of a carrier in the eye and blink until the oil clears.
Aromatically
The first way that essential oils can be used is aromatically or through the air. The most common aromatic way to use essential oils is through a diffuser. The same benefits can be achieved through placing a drop of essential oils on the palm of your hand, rubbing the palms together, and then deeply inhaling for three breaths.
Although the two ways above are the most popular, there are still other ways to use essential oils aromatically.
- While taking a shower, drip 2-3 drops of essential oils onto the floor of the hot shower away from the path of water.
- Add 30 drops of essential oil into a 2 oz glass spray bottle. Fill with the rest with distilled water and spray on bed linens, pillows, and throughout the air.
- Use some oils in household cleaners or a load of laundry.
- Add 2-3 drops of essential oils onto diffuser jewelry in order for the smell to last all day.

Topically
Another great way to use essential oils for beginners is topically. There are so many great options when applying essential oils topically.
The most common places to apply essential oils topically are to the temples, wrists, back of the neck, and bottoms of the feet. For babies and children, I prefer to use them on the bottoms of the feet, so they don’t accidentally get the oils into their eyes.
Roller bottles are a great way to easily dilute and use essential oils by quickly rolling them on when needed. They are small, so they can be easily taken on the go. They are also quick to use since they are already diluted. Since different dilutions are recommended for different ages, I recommend creating customized roller bottles for each of your family members.

Where to buy essential oils?
Essential oils are becoming increasingly popular, and they have become a natural option for those in search of healthy alternatives to toxic household cleaners, personal care products, and for supporting health. Since they are increasing in popularity, they are becoming easier to find. Be careful when purchasing essential oils because not all oils are created equally.
Beginners guide to essential oils.
Essential oils are potent. This is why it is extremely important to only use high quality essential oils that have undergone extensive safety testing. The need for pure, authentic, and genuine essential oils is absolutely necessary.
Some factors to consider when trying to research the best essential oils are the:
- terrain and soil used to grow the plants
- farmer experience
- plants native region
- climate
- method for extracting essential oils
- testing that has been performed
- quality
When it comes to essential oils always think “quality over quantity.”
Be aware that just because an oil says “100% pure essential oil,” does not mean that it is a good oil. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are difficult to come by; therefore, they are more expensive. To truly be therapeutic and provide benefits, the essential oils need to be free of chemicals, carefully extracted using correct methods, bottled in dark glass containers, labeled with their Latin name, and tested.
