The Ultimate List of Everything Needed to Use Essential Oils with Kids!
I get a lot of questions about what is needed when using essential oil on kids! Here is the ultimate list of everything needed to use essential oils with kids!
Why essential oils
Essential oils have so many powerful benefits to support our health. They are a great tool to use for those of us who want to avoid/limit chemicals in our homes and around our kids.
I wasn’t as concerned about this particular area until I had my son. We had used essential oils to support our health but never realized the full extent of how we could utilize these amazing natural tools to help combat the chemicals we come into contact with on a daily basis.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG),
“In a landmark study conducted in 2006, EWG found up to 287 industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides in 10 newborn babies, measured in umbilical cord blood collected at the moment of birth. The contaminants included 133 carcinogens, 157 chemicals that can harm the brain and nervous system and 151 chemicals linked to birth defects.”
That makes it imperative to start using all natural products that are free from these harmful chemicals, especially on our precious children.
The Ultimate List of Everything Needed to Use Essential Oils with Kids
Essential Oils:
This is the most important item on the list. It is so important to really do your research on the brand you choose to use with your family. Not all essential oils are created equally, and if there are fillers or pesticides in the oils, then they could do more harm than good. It is important for me that a company does third party testing, so that they will be transparent as to what are exactly in their essential oils.
If you want more information on the brand I decided on for my family and why you can check out my essential oil guide.
Carrier Oils:
This is another important item, especially when it comes to your kids. Since their bodies are smaller than adults, it is important to always dilute your oils when using them on your kids.
There are many different carrier oils to use, so feel free to pick the one that works best for your family! You could use olive oil, jojoba oil, apricot oil, fractionated coconut oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, and many others! Fractionated coconut oil and coconut oil is what I personally use with my family, but every family is different.
Remember when you start using essential oils that less is always more. Always be cautious when applying diluted essential oils to your children. It is generally recommended 1 drop of essential oil per 1 tbsp of carrier oil to get started. You can work your way up from there depending on how your child reacts to that amount.
Diffuser:
A necessity for any kid is a diffuser. I have one in my kitchen, playroom, and in my son’s bedroom.
Diffusing essential oils during certain times throughout the day and night is very helpful in supporting my son’s health.
During the winter season, I am diffusing more immune supporting essential oils, and during bedtime, I am diffusing essential oils that help support his sleep. It is a great tool for any family to have!
Roller Bottles:
These are very nice to have with kids and when on the go. The advantage of these is that you can pre-dilute the roller bottles so you don’t have to worry about diluting them every time you go to use them!
I am all for making my life to be as simple as I can, and the roller bottles also make applying to kids quick and easy. It only takes a couple of swipes, and then you are done.
Spray Bottles:
Like roller bottles, spray bottles are a way to make using essential oils easy. My favorite way to use these is when I am on the go. I use shopping cart spray, a bedtime pillow spray, and to create calming mists for my playroom.
Here is a blog post that I created on how to make essential oil spray bottles + 3 of my favorite recipes!
Carrying Case:
I use my essential oils everywhere I go with my son. That is why it’s so important to get a good carrying case! I like the ones that can hold roller bottles or the regular 5 or 15 ml bottles in case I want to switch some oils around!
I also love this one that works well for travel!
Labels:
You want to make sure that when you are creating your roller bottles or spray bottles that you label them. This way you will be able to easily locate the roller bottles needed.
Here are printable essential oil labels for kids that you can use again and again!
Another great option is using different colored roller bottle tops like root and petal have (shown above)!
Epsom Salt:
Epsom salt baths are a great way to help detox and unwind for the evening. I like to add a drop of lavender or calming blend to the bath water. It is a great addition to a healthy lifestyle for your little ones!
These baths are also a good way to help support their immune system if they are starting to feel run down. Melaleuca (tea tree) is a great essential oil to help do this.
That was everything needed to use essential oils with kids! I love being able to using natural solutions with my son and knowing that I don’t have to worry about the harmful chemicals that are so prevalent in a lot of products out there.
