How-To Avoid Burnout
Have you ever experienced burnout or fatigue in your day-to-day life? Or maybe you feel like if you slow down a bit everything will fall apart?
I’m sure you have at least once or twice in your life. That’s why I wanted to share some healthy tips on how-to avoid burnout. Keep these tips close by, so you can refer back to them when needed.
What does burnout feel like?
Burnout will feel different to everyone, but in general, burnout feels like you’re running on fumes. It’s a sense of being tired all the time, being mentally and physically exhausted, and having a lack of motivation.
People are generally stressed out and keep going until they get to the burnout point. That’s why it’s so important to know the warning signs of extreme stress and burnout to take steps to help before it gets to that point.
It’s always harder to pick yourself back up (although it’s totally doable) then to simply adjust course when needed.
How-to avoid burnout
Here are some simple ways to help avoid burnout.
1. Pray
God gives us the strength to get through whatever life throws at us. When we are actively praying for His strength to get through the day or whatever is going on, then it’s amazing how He starts working in our lives.
When praying, you can ask him the areas in your life that need readjusting. Maybe there are some areas that He wants you to let go of for more space and peace. When we go to Him first, then it helps us to keep our eyes on the things above.
“Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2
2. Take time for yourself.
Practice self care (even if it’s only a 10 minute bath) as much as you can! Start scheduling in more time to do activities that will fill you up rather than drain you. You will be amazed at how just taking a few minutes each day will add up to great results.

3. Calming essential oils
Essential oils provide many therapeutic benefits as well as smelling great! They can provide calming benefits along with helping to reduce stress. You can easily add them to a diffuser or roll them on the bottoms of you feet (if they’re in roller bottles) throughout the day.
A couple calming essential oils I like to use are:
- Bergamot essential oil (this is also uplifting)
- Lavender essential oil
- Roman Chamomile essential oil
- Frankincense essential oil

4. Gratitude journal
When we take the time each day to write out all the ways we are grateful, then it helps us to focus on all the good things in life instead of the things that aren’t going our way.
Even simply taking 2-5 minutes each day to write 3-5 things in a gratitude journal (or on a post it note) will go a long way in changing the way we think, and showing us there are so many reasons to be grateful!
Here’s a beautiful daily gratitude list you can print off and use each week!
5. Enjoy more
Do something you enjoy! Sometimes it’s not a lack of time, but a lack of doing the things that we enjoy. When we take the time to make sure to do something we enjoy, then we’re actively reducing stress by filling our lives with more of what makes us feel alive.
This can be spending time with family and friends, spending the morning in prayer, turning off our phones for the afternoon, getting out in nature, or just cuddling up with a good book by the fireplace.
When we do this, it’s easier to come back to the day-to-day grind more refreshed and better able to handle things knowing we took some time for ourselves to enjoy life.
6. Unplug
We were not created to be on technology 24/7 although sometimes that’s what we are doing. I’ve found it super helpful to set parameters on when I use technology each day. I don’t check my phone until my morning routine is done, and then at night, my phone gets put down at a certain time. That way I can focus on unwinding before bed.
If this doesn’t sound like something you can do then just try 15 minutes without it, and work your way up from there. There are so many great benefits to doing this at least once a day!
I’ve also noticed when I’m starting to get stressed from work or life that just simply leaving my phone in the house and stepping outside for a walk or hike does wonders to refresh my mind and body. When I do come back to what I was working on, I notice I’m able to get it done faster too, since I took some time to recharge!
7. Take frequent breaks
Take breaks as you go and throughout your day. Also having a day to unplug and rest once a week can help so much. Try not to jam pack your week even if this means saying no to things.
A tip to make sure you’re taking breaks throughout the day is to set a timer for a certain time while you work. When the timer goes off, make sure you take a break before getting back to work. A brisk walk, drinking a glass of water, stretching, or stepping outside for a bit are all great ways to take a quick break!
How-to avoid burnout working from home
Working from home presents certain challenges that you don’t necessarily have to worry about in an office setting. Since your work is essentially always with you, it’s even more important to set up a schedule and guidelines. It’s easy to start blurring work and home life.
It helps to have set hours during the day for work and set hours for being “off.” When you’re not working, make sure to turn off the computer and notifications because it’s second nature to hear a notification pop up and want to take care of it quickly. It’s easier to just pick certain times during the day to check your email or notifications and answer them all at once.
Another tip I have is to try and do the hardest work at your best times of the day. For me, I work best in the morning. That’s why I set aside time to get my writing done or hard projects that require a lot of thinking. This way I can focus on the smaller, easier jobs later in the day when I’m more physically and mentally tired.
With the fast pace that life brings, it’s so easy to start feeling fatigued and run down. Start taking steps now to help avoid burnout. That’s why it’s so important to remember these tips!
