10 Secrets on How To Reduce Toxins in Your Home
Let’s start with 10 secrets on how to reduce toxins in your home that I wish I would have known when I was first getting started!
Just Start
It can be easy to not start something you want to do because of fear or the thought that it’s too much. When you start to feel overwhelmed or fearful, just remember to think of one small thing you can do that day and do it.
When you’re eliminating toxins from your home, it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Simple steps everyday will make the process easier and more enjoyable. Take joy in the journey and go easy on yourself when you’re first getting started.
If you have a family, then try to get them involved in the process as well. Learn with them, teach them how to make cleaner products for your home that you all can enjoy!
Take Off Shoes in the House
This is one of the simplest ways to reduce toxins in your home. Have a designated area in the garage where all your family’s shoes go. It also serves as a reminder that shoes stay outside and are not worn in the house.
You can also have a shoe mat at your front door to easily allow your guests a spot for their shoes as well. Unfortunately, sometimes you’ll have to remind people to take off their shoes in your home, but it’s still an easy step to take that will go along way in reducing toxins.
Keep Non-Toxic Products and Ingredients on Hand
As you start making this transition, one thing that will help is to keep all the products and ingredients you’ll need for DIY non-toxic recipes on hand for when they are needed. You’re more likely to make the recipes if you don’t have to go to the store each time.
It’s hard to know where to start with this, so I created a post about the 5 best non-toxic products or DIY recipes here!
Essential Oils
These are so good to have on hand when switching to non-toxic living because they can be used in so many ways and have so many different purposes! Depending on your needs and the recipes you’re going to be making, you’ll need to keep different ones on hand.
Some of the most versatile essential oils (that can be used in multiple ways at home) are:
- lavender essential oil
- lemon essential oil
- tea tree essential oil
- peppermint essential oil
- lemongrass essential oil
Here are other ways to use essential oils with tons of great recipes as well!
Make Your Own All-Purpose Cleaners
One of the ways you can eliminate toxins from your cleaners is to make your own all-purpose cleaners. I like to keep two on hand in our house for ease of use!
There are a lot of great recipes you can use, and all you really need to get started is a glass spray bottle. I like to use 16 oz for my all-purpose cleaners as I feel they work the best.

Ditch Air Fresheners
Many of these products contains toxins that can mess with your body’s natural rhythm. They may contribute to headaches, and allergies.
It’s best to just try and avoid these as much as possible. If you’re looking for all-natural alternatives, then using essential oils and making your own room spray fresheners is a great alternative!
Here are diffuser blends that are perfect to use in the house, and here are easy room spray recipes you can make!
Make Your Own Hand Soap
Along with all-purpose cleaners, another product you’re using often is hand soap. That’s why I created a great recipe you can use with non-toxic products.
The best part? There are recipes you can use for hand soap that only require 3 ingredients! Here is one of my favorite all-natural foaming hand soap recipe I use at my house, and I know you’ll love it too!
You’ll simply have to get glass foaming hand soap dispensers to get started!
Switch Makeup and Beauty Products
Makeup is one area that many people don’t think about for reducing toxins. Since it’s something you apply on your face, some people don’t understand why this matters.
The skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs what we put on it. That’s why it’s important to switch our beauty care products (like lotions and shampoos) as well.
If you’d love to know how your makeup ranks on the EWG list of clean products, they have a skin deep database that helps you see the good, bad and ugly of certain makeup and beauty care products! This is a great place to start if you’re wondering which brands make the cut.
You can also make your own beauty care products, so you know exactly what ingredients you’re using! Here’s a homemade face mask recipe with essential oils and a best DIY essential oil face spray moisturizer recipe!
Healthy Food Choices
If you’re wondering how to avoid toxins in food, then there are a few things to keep in mind and look for when grocery shopping.
1. Select organic and non-gmo foods. Pesticides contains a lot of toxins and should be avoided as much as you can! If you can’t buy organic all the time, I suggest sticking with at least buying organic for the EWG’s dirty dozen list which is simply a list of the produce they have found with the most pesticide residue.
Each year they come out with a new list so make sure to bookmark and come back to the page when needed. If interested, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) also has a clean 15 list as well.
2. Avoid processed foods. Most processed foods have toxins from preservatives, vegetable oils and food dyes. There has been a lot of research on the effects of processed foods on the health of ourselves and our kids.
Even the processed foods listed as “natural” have things in them we should be avoiding. The best thing to do is to try and reduce processed foods, and cook from scratch as much as possible!
There are so many places to find simple, healthy and nutritious meals now, that it makes cooking from scratch so much easier!
A tip I have if you’re short on time is to batch cook. This means making a bigger portion when you make a meal, so you can have it another night. Or you can make a few different meals in one night, so it’s easier the other nights of the week.
Give Yourself Grace
As with starting anything for the first time, this can seem overwhelming at first when you consider all the areas of your life that will need cleaned up. The important thing to remember is to take it one step at a time.
You aren’t going to have this all done in the matter of a few days with everything else you most likely have on your plate. Give yourself grace.
One strategy is to start with one of the secrets listed above to start with, and do only that one. Once you’ve got a good handle on that secret, then you can move onto others.
If you don’t overwhelm yourself at first, give yourself grace, and take it one step at a time you’re more likely to stick with it! You’ll be amazed at the progress you’ve made a month or year from now if you keep taking steps forward towards your goals every day.
