How to Use Essential Oils Safely
Essential oils can be great natural solutions to help support our bodies when used properly. It is important to note that even though they are natural doesn’t mean they are necessarily safe in every situation. Here are some tips on how to use essential oils safely.
How to Use Essential Oils Safely
When using any new product, it is important to remember that every body is different. What works for someone might not work for someone else. Along with that are certain safely precautions to take when using these amazing natural solutions. Here are some tips on how to use essential oils safely!
1. Quality Matters
Since essential oils are highly concentrated, it is necessary to use pure, unadulterated, and authentic essential oils. The reason for this is the oils must be free of chemicals in order to produce the therapeutic benefits. There are chances of adverse responses when using adulterated essential oils.
Check to see if the essential oil company you buy from creates their oils from plants that are sourced indigenously (where they are natively grown).
Also look for a company that guarantees synthetic or prohibited chemicals were not used, and that the company provides third party testing to ensure the quality of each essential oil bottle purchased.

2. Follow the Usage Directions on the Bottle
Make sure you use as directed on the essential oil bottle. Certain essential oils can be diffused, used topically, and some are even recommended for internal use.
Also some essential oils are not recommended for babies, young children, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It is very important that you never use oils at any of the body’s entry points (including ears, nose, etc.)
3. Less is More
Since essential oils are highly concentrated, a little bit goes a long way. This means you should dilute when necessary, and always start off with less than you think you need.
When you dilute with a carrier oil, it dilutes the essential oil along with preventing easy evaporation. Since the carrier oil dilutes the potency of the essential oil, the chances of experiencing any irritation is reduced.
Some essential oils can be applied “neat” meaning no carrier oil, but it is recommended that you always test a small area on the skin first.
Infants, toddlers, and young children are more sensitive to essential oils. This means you should always dilute with these age groups. A general rule of thumb for this age range is 1 tbsp/tsp of carrier oil per 1 drop of essential oil.
4. Quality of Carrier Oil is Important
Not many people touch on this, but similar to how quality is important with essential oils, quality is also important when using carrier oils. It’s important to use an unprocessed and organic carrier oils (like organic coconut oil) along with the essential oil you are using when applying topically.
Our skin is our largest organ. Everything that gets put on our skin gets absorbed into our bodies so we need to make sure we are using the highest quality products available.
5. Go Slow and Research
Don’t feel like the second you get your essential oils you need to use them all at once. It is going to take time for you to get accustomed to them and know what each one is useful for.
I always recommend starting off with one essential oil, trying it out, learning about it, then moving on to another one. That way you don’t get overwhelmed with all the different essential oils and ways you can use them!
I would also make sure to find someone knowledgable in essential oils that you can have available to answer any questions you may have. It’s important to learn how to use essential oils safely. If you are ever unsure of how to use a certain essential oil, don’t use it.
There are many great resources out there to help you find the safe and correct way to use it!
