9 Stress Management Tips
Are you looking for ways to manage stress? Does it seem like you’re spinning your wheels and feel overwhelmed with everything life’s been throwing at you lately? Here are 9 stress management tips that will help reduce the overwhelm in your life and keep you focused on the things that matter.
9 Stress Management Tips
Life is busy and chaotic at times. It feels like there is a never ending list of to-do’s with hardly any time to get anything accomplished.
Being in a constant state of stress isn’t healthy for our bodies. Unfortunately, there will always be stress and stressful situations in our lives. The most important thing we can do is learn how to manage our stress so that it doesn’t overtake us.
Here are 9 tips to help manage the stressful situations that life brings:
1. Take a moment to breathe.
Life goes at such a fast pace that sometimes we forget to take a moment and breathe. Just the simple act of taking 3-5 deep breathes helps to calm us down in the most stressful situations.
When we take a moment and breathe, then we are able to step out of the moment and focus our attention on something else.
2. Pray and lean on God’s strength.
So much is outside of our control, and I think sometimes we try to rely on our own strength to get us through. If there’s one thing I hope you take away, it’s to pray and lean on God’s strength to get you through.
When we pray and present our requests to God, He hears us. He might now answer us right away or in the way we want Him to, but He is listening and is working. Let Him guide you through the Word, praying, and through being with the church family.
I think sometimes we forget that we weren’t made to rely on our own strength (because it’s not enough). God’s strength is enough, though, and it will always be.
3. Write down 5 things for which you’re grateful.
Gratitude is such a powerful tool to use especially when you’re stressed. It’s easy to look at all the things to do or that you don’t have, but it’s harder to train your brain to think of all the great things that you have in this life.
When we practice gratitude, then we put the focus on all the things in our life that are going well and what we are thankful for. It helps take some of the stress out of the day knowing that at least, in this moment, these things are good.
Gratitude lists
I would suggest getting gratitude into your everyday life. You can do this as part of your morning routine, evening routine, or before starting work, but simply think and write down 3-5 things you’re thankful for.
This is such a game changer because doing this every day will start to help with your stress levels throughout the day. Things do need to get done, but there are more important things in life. When we take a moment and think about these things, it helps bring us some peace.
Here are some cute journals you can use!
4. Diffuse or roll on calming essential oils.
Essential oils have so many great emotional benefits including helping to lessen feelings of stress. When we use these powerful oils throughout the day, they can help to calm and soothe our emotions.
Calming essential oils to keep on hand are:
- roman chamomile
- lavender
- ylang ylang
- frankincense
- wild orange
These oils can either be used aromatically or topically.
How-to use essential oils aromatically.
- diffuser
- add a drop or two to the palm of your hands, rub them together, then cup over your nose and mouth as you inhale deeply for at least 3 breaths
- diffuser jewelry
- adding a drop or two and rubbing throughout your hair
- ceramic diffusers
How-to use essential oils topically.
- roller bottles
- diluting the essential oil, then applying where needed
No matter how you use essential oils, the best thing is to just get started. My top 5 I recommend to beginners are lavender, lemon, tea tree, peppermint, and frankincense. These 5 have so many great benefits!
5. Nourish your body with healthy food and supplements to help support your body.
Eating healthy food and supplementing is so important for our health. It’s so easy to reach for convenience instead of doing the harder work of making sure to prepare and bring foods into our home that help us.
When we are feeding our body with the right foods and supplementing when needed, then we are making sure to give our bodies the nutrients that they need to help us with stress management.
6. Take unnecessary tasks off your to-do list.
This is so important because we tend to over schedule ourselves and overcomplicate things. There are so many things we could be doing with our day that we tend to add more and more without even realizing it.
We only have one life here on earth and only a limited time. The one thing we can’t get back is our time, but yet that’s normally the first thing we so easily give up.
Being intentional with the time we spend here takes practice. It’s not easy (at least right away) to realize the important things we should devote our time to and the unnecessary time wasters that can take over if we let them.
Prioritize your schedule.
In order to take back our time and what we do with it (which will lead to less stress), we need to get straight on the to-do items on our list that aren’t important. When we see all the to-do’s on our list, it is bound to create some stress.
Instead, cross off or erase the things that aren’t important. As you start eliminating things from your life, not only will you feel less stress (because there’s less to manage), but you’ll rediscover the important things where you should devote your time and energy.
Get clear on your “why” and your vision for your “like”, and eliminate the rest. You’ll be thankful you did.
7. Take time for yourself.
While I’m a big proponent for finding peace in the chaos, I also think it’s important to take time for yourself. As a mom of two little kids, I feel like I’m mentally drained at the end of the day because it’s constant talking, playing, or questions. I’m grateful for this season I’m in, and I remind myself of this often during the rough moments. However, it doesn’t take away the need for quiet and time to myself.
I don’t know how easy it is for you to take time for yourself right now in whatever season of life you’re in, but friend, it’s definitely needed. Even if it means having to wait to your husband gets home to run upstairs for a warm bath or hiring a babysitter, so you can sit outside to read a good book.
Getting creative.
Get creative with how you schedule your time. You can also try and swap times with another mom, so you can watch her kids. Then she can watch yours for you. It’s possible if you make it a priority, and when you’re feeling stressed, taking some time for yourself could be just the thing you needed.
8. Get outside in nature.
One of the most calming and relaxing places to be is outside. There is something to sitting at the beach or sitting outside listening to the bird chirping (like I’m currently doing as I write this).
I realize that not all of us have access to the beach or can just walk outside all the time, but there are ways to get outside when needed.
Outdoor activities.
There are so many things you can do outside to help with stress management including taking a walk, going for a jog, taking a hike, just sitting outside and listening to nature all around you, or playing with your little ones or friends.
The ideas are endless as you can pretty much bring anything you do indoors to the outdoors if you want! What a wonderful way to reduce stress!
9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
The last tip on stress management is don’t be afraid to ask for help. I think sometimes it’s difficult asking for help because we don’t want to burden others or feel like we may look weak. The reality is that we weren’t designed to do life individually but as part of a community with those surrounding us.
Even if you don’t have family or friends around, it’s important to get connected with some people you trust. Do you live in a neighborhood? There are normally so many great options in them as there are many women and moms who would be within walking distance.
Go out for walks or jogs, and stop to connect with others. You can also try and ask around for babysitters that you can trust for times you need it as well.
It’s just important to ask for help when you need it instead of trying to power through. Sometimes when we are able to ask for help and step away, we’re able to come back to any situation calmer and with more grace.
Remember to try and celebrate the little things in life each day. I know life can be stressful, but remember that God is good. He loves you, and He is faithful.
